Update Your Kitchen with these 3 Easy Upgrades

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Kohler for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

I have said it before and I will say it again now. Upgrading your kitchen does not always require a complete remodel. There are so many simple things you can do to make your kitchen look amazing on a budget. I’m going to share a few of them with you today.

Update your Kitchen Faucets

This is a big one that not only can change the style of your kitchen, but can also help in how you use your kitchen, yes a faucet can do all of that! Having a stylish Faucet can bring your home into a new trend, keep it classic or a little crazy.

Personally I love these new faucets from Kohler, they are only available at Lowe’s. So you will have to check them out in person there. Here are a few reasons I love them for a kitchen upgrade.

Cardale Kitchen Faucet

  • 2-function spray head with touch control, Sweep(TM) spray, and aerated stream settings
  • DockNetik(TM) that ensures a secure spray head fit
  • Kohler Scratch Shield (TM) finishes that resist corrosion and tarnishing, exceeding industry durability standards over two times.
  • Left or right handle installation and 360° spout rotation
  • A 10-1/2-in (267 mm) escutcheon plate and soap dispenser
  • 1-Piece, self-contained ceramic disc valve that allows both volume and temperature control

Elliston Kitchen Faucet

A polished Chrome 1-Handle Pull-Out Sink or Counter Mount Kitchen Faucet.

  • Kohler Scratch Shield (TM) finishes that resist corrosion and tarnishing, exceeding industry durability standards over two times.

  • Kohler ceramic disk valves crush and remove line debris, and exceed industry longevity standards by over two times, ensuring durable performance for life

As you can see these faucets will add a new look to your kitchen along with some great benefits for every day use, but why stop at a kitchen faucet?

Update your cabinet hardware

While your at Lowe’s buying one of those amazing faucets why not find some new cabinet hardware to match! Updating and matching your hardware is a great way to make sure that your kitchen looks clean and upgraded.

Create a new back splash

This one will require a bit more work but it will be worth it in the end. If you don’t have a backslash already creating one will give your kitchen a whole new look! Find some unique tiles that will create a focal point for your kitchen. Place them behind the sink and stove to create a look that is unique to you.

A Green Refrigerator That Takes Green to a Whole Other Level

You all know that I am very into green building, design and product for your home, but really this one is green to the extreme and I personally love the idea, though I am not so sure about storing my food in green, or any other color for that matter, goo. Still this is a great concept that looks really cool.

green goo fridgeThe refrigerator itself is made of a non-sticky goo that keep your food cold. The goo also does not smell so you don’t have to worry about it smelling up your home. The plus side in my opinion is that you will know when your food starts to go bad and you can find everything. I wonder though does the goo trap in the smell of bad food??

Personally I think this could lead to some very cool design concepts as this looks like it’s not as deep as a normal refrigerator, it could be put in some very interesting places in the kitchen and other spots in your home. My only worry is what about the big stuff? Would this be useful in a family home or would it be better suited to a bachelor pad where the person doesn’t entertain often and eats out a lot. For me it would never work as I love to cook and bake. You just cant store a huge cake or a roast in this refrigerator, so that keeps the classic safe for now.

What do you think of this new green goo?

Create Style with Sheet Metal Accents

Are you looking for something different to update your home with? Maybe your tired of the same old stone look or your thinking you just want something simple, yet modern and fun. You need to look at sheet metal fabrication for your home. Not only will it give you that amazing clean look, but it can be used in so many different ways that you can update your look for a low cost or spend a little more to create a wow look.

Use sheet metal in your kitchen for countertops and vents. it’s a wonderful, though more expensive way to update your look, but look at the results. It’s so simple and clean looking that you just know that anyone walking in would think “WOW”. I know I would.

This would also be a great way to modernize a bar area for entertaining needs. Just add a few modern stools and some cool lights and you have a amazing looking bar that will make you think twice about going out to the bar!

Just think about how easy this would be to clean up too!

Bench header test

Maybe you just want an interesting outdoor look you could try something similar to this amazing bench I found. Really that is a cool looking bench and just think of what you could do on the side besides what is shown. With sheet metal the possibilities are almost endless! It really could be the piece you are looking for to liven up your garden.

My Love Of Easy Easy Easy

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Moen, Incorporated for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

 photo 87599srsSET2_zps497d8a94.jpg

My home decor style is simple, classic with a bit of a modern twist and of course easy to use, clean and take care of items. The room that reflects this most in my home is the kitchen, where I always try to make my life as easy as possible as I love to cook, but hate to clean! That is why I would love to the Kiran Spot Resist one-handle pulldown kitchen faucet from Moen in my kitchen!

photo SpotResistregjpg_zps01cfd3d1.jpgWhat I love most about this faucet is not that it’s spot resistant or that it’s also finger print resistant, but that it has a wonderfully high arch pull-down that makes it easy to keep my kitchen clean because I can put so much under it! I could also keep my car cleaner and my floors cleaner and I’m sure a number of other things cleaner as I would be able to put a bucket in my sink and fill it! No I do not have a huge wash basin, though I would love one!

Not only does the design of the faucet work well with my existing kitchen decor it’s just a nice piece to look at. Really who wouldn’t want this in there home? Okay, I’m sure someone won’t, but we won’t worry about them.

Want to get one of your own? You can buy the at Lowe’s (one of my favorite home improvement stores!)

Shine up your Kitchen and Bath Tile

pink back splash

Is your kitchen or bath looking a little boring? Are you ready for a change that will make it dramatic and fun? Do you want your friends to walk in and say “WOW”? Well I have the perfect solution for your kitchen and bath décor problem, a glass backsplash! What is great about glass tile is that it’s unique, fun and you can do so many different things with it and even if your friends use the same tile as you, it’s still going to look different then your tile.

Glass tile comes in different shapes, sizes and types. You can get it is webbing that allows for a pretty easy instillation and you can get bigger pieces separately to create your own look. Sometimes you want to mix and match the two to create an interesting and unique look, but make sure to plan and sketch out the tile plan before putting the tile on the wall.

A backsplash can really change how a kitchen or a bath feels. It can create drama, relax you or even make you hungry, cold, or warm. It can completely change the look of your room and is not extremely expensive to do.

Do you have a glass tile backsplash? How do you like it?

Elevate Your Kitchen Décor

Kitchens are the heart of the home, they come in all shapes sizes and colors, but without some creativity you can’t give your kitchen the pizzazz is deserves to have and the wow factor you want it to.

One way you can make your kitchen proud is to use kitchen tile as a backsplash and focal point tile can really create that wow effect and give your friends and family something to talk about too.

Using unique tile like the one above can be a great way to show off your unique personality and style. This makes me thing of a warm exotic climate, but who knows maybe this kitchen is really located in Alaska!

Using different types of tile can also create some great drama in your kitchen. This modern look is emphasized by the chrome and black tiles. it’s a fun look that still is understated enough that it will last a long time.

The last look is one that I really love as it’s fun and different. It’s whimsical and fun while still being something that you will not get tired of quickly or want to get rid of any time soon.

Have you retiled your kitchen? Share with you your experience and feel free to send me your photos too.

DIY Kitchen Remodeling Tips

The following is a guest post

The kitchen is a popular place for friends and family to gather in the relaxed living style that is popular today. To make it enjoyable for everyone, a kitchen may need a little sprucing up or remodeling to let it retain its status as one of the favorite rooms in a home. Anyone who enjoys a do-it-yourself project can find many areas to improve. Plumbing is especially important in a kitchen for cooking, cleaning and for washing dishes, and it is usually a good idea to leave that part of a job to professionals like those at Tacoma plumbers.

867054_kitchenUntil it is time for the plumber to arrive, the preliminary steps include designing a plan for the changes that can make a difference in the way the kitchen is used. Going to a home improvement store can provide ideas for a new sink that makes washing large pots and pans easier. Faucets with a high arch are particularly good designs that allow excellent access to a sink.

A good do-it-yourself project is the installation of new countertops. Almost no other remodeling project provides the amount of improvement in a kitchen as a new countertop. The first steps involve taking precise measurements of the existing one to make sure that it is the same length and width. Another important dimension is to check whether the wall behind it is square. By placing a builder’s square in a corner, a do-it-yourself handyman is able to see whether a new countertop can fit properly.
Removing the old sink requires shutting off the water at the valve and removing the supply lines. With the drain trap removed, the sink is ready for removal. Getting the carpentry work partially completed, including the removal of an old countertop, makes it possible for plumbers to get down to work on installing a new sink and fixtures.
While plumbing may seem fairly easy to a casual observer, the possibility of leaks is very important to consider. Pipes that bring water into a home are under a lot of pressure, and water finds a way to work through the smallest opening. A pvc pipe joint that is not prepared perfectly with cleaner and glue can make it possible for a leak to develop under the sink, completely out of sight. As water slowly accumulates, it creates a moist and damp condition where mold can thrive. Professional plumbers make sure that nothing leaks and an installation is perfect.

The primary reasons for remodeling a kitchen are to add attractiveness and convenience. A new sink, a tall faucet and a new countertop can go a long way toward accomplishing both goals. The clean appearance is appealing to family and friends, and the improved efficiency of a faucet that adds easy access to work tasks is a wonderful convenience. A do-it-yourself project that you can have full control over, and save some pennies, is bound to please everyone!

Make Your Kitchen Accessible

Not only do people who need an extra hand love an accessible kitchen, but people who don’t need the extra help love all the gadgets too. One of my favorite ones is the Lazy Susan, why it’s called that I don’t know but it’s really one of the best things made for a kitchen. It helps you use the space in your corner cabinets without having to add a bunch of bells and whistles.

Another thing I love to see in a kitchen is shelving that moves up and down so you can store heavy items on it without having to worry about how to get it down. The shelve will do all of the work for you. It will bring the item down and a simple push will take it back up. This is a great addition to anyone’s kitchen but a really great addition to a kitchen belonging to someone who is disabled.

The last thing an accessible kitchen needs is a sink that can be accessed by a wheelchair. I actually love the look of these sinks. If you want the extra storage you can use the space under the sink to store the garbage can or maybe place some nice baskets. Of course you would only want to do that if you don’t need to access the sink with a wheelchair yet.

Those are a couple of solutions for a great accessible kitchen. What ideas do you have?

Design Your Dream Kitchen

I love going into homes and checking out what I can do with the kitchen. It’s just something I love to do  and I think I’m pretty good at it. Kitchen remodeling can be a very expensive process, but it can be very worth it. Having a kitchen that meets your needs can be such a nice experience and so worth the cost of the remodel.

The first thing you need when you design your kitchen is to remember how you use it. Do you need more then one sink? A double oven or maybe an oven located away from another oven. Maybe you want a grill included in your stovetop or one located in another spot. Once you figure out how you want to use your kitchen you want to then work on the work triangle. A work triangle is the shape formed by your refrigerator, stove and sink. You want this area to be under 5 feet on each side so that your work is easier to do. Now if you have more then one oven only one needs to be included in the triangle as most of the time you will not be using the extras. If you do make sure to put them as close to the triangle as possible.

When it comes to your sink you want to make sure you get a sink that works with your design and lifestyle. Do you need a single sink, a double sink or a triple sink. Do you want two sinks or maybe you love the look of a farm sink. Figure out how you use your sink and then pick one from there.

The big thing when it comes to a kitchen remodel is to do what you want to do. Don’t follow the trends as they come and go and you don’t want to be stuck with a dated kitchen. Figure out what you like and use it. If you love stainless use stainless, if you like black, use black. Design for you not for a magazine.

Spruce up your Kitchen Decor

Most of you know that I love shopping online for home decor. I love it because it’s not only fun to look at everything that’s out there, but there is such a huge selection of items that you will find what you want. This also applies to Kitchen decor. I have spent a little time online looking for some things that I would want in my new kitchen, since I move in less then a month and really need to consider what my kitchen will look like.

I love this spice rack because it’s modren and not only does it look a little different than other spice racks, it would go really well with my cookware set I have already picked out and ordered.

That is one thing you want to remember when decorating your kitchen, keep it simple and try to keep things looking the same, same metal, color and style can go a long way and an even longer way if you have a small kitchen You don’t want everything mismatched and all over the place if your space is small, it will just make it look even smaller.

The next thing I looked at and loved were kitchen curtains. They looked fun, though I don’t have a window in my kitchen I do have a doorway to my laundry room that I think I may stick a curtain on until I get a door. I think using curtains instead of doors can create a dramatic effect in a room and could be a lot of fun for a kids playroom.

Should You Go Granite?

The trend right now is to do stone counter tops and personally I do love them, but sometimes buying granite countertops can be an expense that you just don’t need or want. It depends on your personal situation.

The first is do you want them for you and how long will you be in your home. If you love granite and don’t want anything else and you will be in your home for at least 10 years, go for it. There is no reason you shouldn’t get granite counters. If you however plan to move in 3-5 years or don’t really want that type of counter top then don’t buy it unless everyone else in your area has it as you want your home comparable to sell.

Can you really afford it? You may not be able to, so cost is the second thing you need to think about. If you love the look try a granite tile or maybe just have it in one area of your kitchen. This way you still get the feel without the expense.

These are really the two most important factors when considering a granite counter top. Do you have granite in your home?

Design You Dream Kitchen Plan

It’s not hard to design a new kitchen as long as you know a few basic things you will be well on your way to a beautiful kitchen that you may actually want to cook in. Since the kitchen is the heart of the home and everyone seems to end up there eventually it’s a good idea to devote as much space as you can to your new kitchen. Of course there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

You Only Have so Much Space

Measure the space you have to devote to your kitchen and make sure to keep in mind any additions your doing or if your knocking down walls as you need to measure that space as well. If you create a wonderful design, but don’t have to space to put it into place then you are really just wasting your time and energy on something that can not be.

Remember the Kitchen Triangle.

No this is not a call to dinner triangle, but the triangle that is created by the sink, stove and refrigerator. Now you can also have more then one Kitchen Triangle and that may consist of a second sink, ovens or other major appliance. You want these positioned in a triangle so that cooking and clean up is faster and easier. Also you want a small triangle, not a big one so try to keep the space between these items at a happy medium. I usually go no more then 3-5 feet per triangle side.

Don’t Go With The Trends

Yes, I know the trends are pretty and fun and new… for now. Tried and true designs that are classic make it so you can enjoy your kitchen for many years, not just one or two. If you have the money to remodel your kitchen every two or three years go ahead and copy the trends, but if your like most people you need a kitchen that will work for a long time.

Design Your Kitchen For You

If you have a large family and need three sinks, four stoves and a grill along with a gas range, go for it, but if you have a normal size family or may sell your home in a year or two don’t add in too many personalized extras. You want your home to appeal to a buyer or you want to be able to enjoy your space, not just see a bunch of metal everywhere.

If you do want a more personalized touch to your kitchen try wall decals or accessories to add a more personal touch.

If you follow these few simple rules and ideas you should end up with a great kitchen design that works for you and your family without too much of a hassle or too many extras that just get in the way.

Go Green with Pull Out Shelves: Made in America

One great part of a well designed kitchen is having shelves that pull out, not only does it save you time because you don’t have to crawl around on your floor, but you now will actually use all of your shelve space and have room for everything. Yes, even I have fallen victim to the empty back of the shelve problem.

If your one of the people who want to buy made in America products you will be happy to know that there is a company in Nevada that makes pull out shelves and are very environmentally conscious. Shelves That Slide has redone their design process so that it’s more sustainable and better for the environment. They have cut their waste by saving packing materials and donating them to a local school for craft projects. I love this idea because it keeps art in schools and maybe may just inspire a child or two to become an interior designer! The company also works with another company to share Styrofoam. Shelves That Slide reuses their partners Styrofoam to ship their products in.

Shelves that Slide also carries Lazy Susans, drawer organizers, blind corner storage systems, and custom fitted tip-out trays. Check them out and find something American made for your home.

Oneida Culinaria Dinnerware Review

When it comes to a great holiday table you want dishes that will help you show off as well as last thought the dinner. Many times people pull out the fine china and find that a few of their plates are broken by the end of the meal. That is why I was excited to check out the Oneida Culinaria Dinnerware.  It not only comes in a variety of colors but is very durable and has a 3-year chip warranty.  The dishes are beautiful and would complement any holiday table.

Another reason I would recommend this dinnerware is that it’s an Oneida brand and Oneida is known for their quality and customer service. Also when you buy tableware that is this durable you can use it year around and not worry about wear and tear on your plates.

My personal suggestion would be to mix and match the colors and create a beautiful and colorful table for the holidays or any day. The colors I would recommend would be the chili and A La Mode or the blue sage and A La Mode. Both would make a very festive table.

Update Your Kitchen Without A Remodel

Do you have an outdated kitchen that you wish someone would come and remodel or at least do something with? I have been in that situation and having a kitchen that doesn’t work for you can just cause you to go crazy. Sometimes you can easily update your kitchen by doing simple things like painting, changing the hardware or by refacing your cabinets.  Sometimes if the problem is using the kitchen it’s a little more extensive to fix.

If you just want to update the look Cabinet Refacing may just be what your looking for. Along with a new coat of paint refacing your cabinets may give you the new kitchen look without the huge price tag of remodeling your kitchen.  Since remodels range anywhere from $5,000 to $30,000 for a standard home kitchen remodel refacing may just be better for your budget and bottom line.  Refacing is also a great way to update your kitchen for resale, so if you are trying to sell your home you may just want to see if refacing will help you get more offers and hopefully more money.

You can sometimes do refacing your self or you can check out local home improvement stores and see what they offer in terms of Kitchen Cabinets Refacing. Some places will even offer classes to help you learn how to do it yourself, though I do suggest if you have the money that you hire someone to do the refacing for you so that it’s done correctly and well. I really suggest it if you are just redoing the cabinets to sell your home, that way you know the people who buy your home have a good quality job done and it’s not going to cause problems for them later.

No matter what you decide to do with your kitchen updating it can not only help you sell your home now, but may help you sell it later or live in it longer. A well designed kitchen can last a long time and keep you happy in your home.

Make a Splash with Your Kitchen Backsplash

One thing that people don’t think is a big deal in their kitchen is the backsplash, the truth is when I backsplash is done really, really well it can be just the think to draw in your guest and give the kitchen that wow factor that you have always wanted it to have.

It’s very simple to put in a back splash and you can find great Kitchen Backsplash Ideas online and in magazines. Sometimes just finding one tile you love can give you the inspiration to change up your backsplash. I personally love the look of a stone backsplash in a more traditional kitchen where a really cool tile or metal would work great in a more modern kitchen. Really your backsplash should represent your personal style and show off what you love. If you love blue and have a ton of blue dishes or appliances then do a backsplash in blue.

Another awesome backsplash is wood. I know many people think I’m crazy right now but I recently saw a very cool looking bamboo backsplash that just floored me and made me rethink using wood as a backsplash. The image I have here is a great example of how wood can be used as a backsplash and focal point in your kitchen.

If you could change your backsplash what material/color would you use?

Create the Kitchen of your Dreams

Sometimes creating the kitchen of your dreams can be as simple as doing it yourself. It’s not always that difficult and with ready to assemble  cabinets and a little bit of work. What I love about rta cabinets is that almost anyone can put together a decent kitchen on their own without a huge hassle. Though I do recommend you use a designer for any custom or complicated designs a simple small kitchen can be done on your own and actually pretty quickly.

I also know that right now most people are not looking to spend a lot of money and if you can pick up decent discount kitchen cabinets then I say do it. Just make sure they are going to fit your design and don’t forget to measure, measure and measure again. With kitchen cabinets you need to be right on with your measurements from the height of the wall where each cabinet is put to the exact length of the wall all the way from the top to bottom, yes the top can be different from the bottom and even a fraction of an inch can kill a well designed kitchen.

So, if your ready to jump into a fun and rewarding DIY project try tackling your kitchen, who knows maybe your handiwork will be the talk of the town.

Do It Yourself Kitchen Design

I love when you can do some projects yourself. Now I know I’m an interior designer and I’m telling you to do something yourself. There are a few things that you can do, though some big projects I would recommend at least consulting a designer for. One is kitchen design, but with RTA cabinets (Ready to Assemble) you can do the instillation work yourself and save a lot of money.

I personally love the look of cherry and these Cherryville Cabinets are really very beautiful. I found this line at RTA Cabinet Store where they have a great selection of RTA kitchen cabinets.  What I love about this company is that they are a wholesale distributor so the products are cheaper and you could win $4000 in their kitchen renovation contest. That could just pay for some of that kitchen or a vacation after all the work you have done.  Another good reason to use this company is that they have worked with both HGTV and DIY networks so you know they are a company you can trust.

Kitchen cabinets are one of the best ways to update a kitchen and improve the value of your home. I would recommend that anyone looking for a cheap way to update check out RTA cabinets because they are easy to install and can really make your home look and feel amazing for a lot less.

Expand Your Kitchen With New Cabinetry

My last post was about changing the look of your kitchen with Retro appliances, this time I’m going to talk to you a little about how the right type of Kitchen cabinets can help you get the space you need in a kitchen no matter how small. I’m also going to focus on local materials as this is very important when you are trying to save money with your remodel.

Take a look at the images I have here in this post, these cabinets are from Bardon Cabinetry and I have used them to demonstrate a point. Special order cabinets can be expensive, but when it comes to saving space you can not beat them. Now if you were to look up San Diego Kitchen Cabinets you would finds some great places to buy cabinets, if you live near San Diego you may find that you can save by picking up these cabinets yourself, thus offsetting the cost. This is where buying local comes into play, yes you could go and buy online from someone in another country, but that wouldn’t be helping the US economy now would it.

So lets apply this to something else, say a bathroom again look up san diego bathroom remodeling and again you may just find a few places to do business. I suggest you pick one and stick to one if you have more then one project as sometimes having two projects going though the same company can help keep down cost, your only dealing with one designer, one company and probably the same people over and over, that makes communication better and helps with your bottom line. Any questions?

Kitchens Going Retro?

Yes, this is a trend that may just stick around for a long time. Retro kitchens are the new it thing in kitchen design. People like the funky yet classic look a retro kitchen can have, also in some homes it actually works with the rest of the architectural style as the kitchen is now doing a 180 back to when the home was built.

Retro kitchens of course do not mean losing all of the modern conveniences.  As you can see from the images I have selected it’s not hard to keep our dishwasher, top of the line refrigerator and stove but still have that retro look. Personally I love the green stove, it’s fun, funky and makes a statement. I would choose a dark wood and maybe a darker finish to help make this stove stand out in your kitchen. What do you think of the retro look?
