Moving, Moving Boxes and Your Home

Most people hate moving and I don’t blame them at all. I have moved many many times in my life and I hate doing it, but it gives me a great chance to check out a new place, meet some new people and of course redecorate my home.

The worst part for me about moving is packing everything up. It’s time consuming and sometimes can just be difficult. Maybe you don’t have the right size moving boxes or maybe you ran out of newspaper and it’s only Monday! Either way sometimes moving can just be hard, but if your smart when you move it really should be painless.

My top 5 moving tips:

Gather boxes ahead of time or plan to buy Moving boxes
Ask everyone you know for their newspapers, this is really helpful if you have a lot of glass or other fragile things.
If you can clean and paint in your new home before moving anything in.
Get references from moving companies or talk with friends about who they have used.
Have insurance kept on both residences. You never know what could happen while your moving into your new home and out of the old one. I had a friend who was robbed while she moved.

Of course there are many other things you can do when you move that will make the experience helpful. I always try to drive around the area a few times before I actually move there so that I learn where things are, you just never know what you may need when you are moving or what may not get turned on in time, you know things like the gas and electric. It’s not fun moving to a new place only to find you can’t cook or shower!

How Old Are Your Pillows?

If your like most Americans, you have pillows from your childhood. Yep, some people just can’t let things go, but really you should. When it comes to your pillows and mattresses you really need to just get rid of them. Pillows should be replace at least once a year, though I recoomend more for anyone with alergyes.

Your mattress, yes that thing you sleep on that you spend $2000 on, needs to be replaced every 5-10 years, depending on the type and how often it’s slept on. Mattresses in guest rooms can probably go 7-12 years while your bed may just make it to five. Yes, this can be expencive, but if you look at what is in your matress you may start to think you need a new one.

Live Dust mites- They are everywhere and they eat your dead skin cells. Most dust mites multiply rapidly in your mattress and pillows.
Skin cells- just like snakes we shed our skin, that ends up in your mattress and eventually lunch for that local dust mite
Dead Dust mites- I don’t know whats worse, dead ones or the ones that still move. Yuck!
Pet dander- Your beloved pet sheds too and all that fir and dander could end up in your mattress and pillows.

Find Lost Treasures for Your Home

Do you yard sale? Well if you don’t you should start. My town is having a town wide sale and I have to say I have found some great things while I was broseing around. There were some nice tables, chairs and even a sofa. Now, you do have to watch out for scams and so on as some people mark things up too much and say they are something they are not. Most of the time though you are okay.

The top 5 things you want to look for at a yard sale that will increase in value.

Antique or close to antique items
Collectible items. If they are selling them at a reasonable price.
Towels, you can always use them
Wooden furniture that is made well
Drinking glasses, we all use them and most of the time they can be sold again and again. I personally own a set that is 50 years old, but looks new.

Copy Cat Design

Have you ever looked at a picture in a magazine and copied the image exactly in your own room? Well that is called copy cat design and it’s okay when your doing it just for you, but in the professional world it’s not such a great idea. So what do the professionals do? Well they look at that same image for inspiration and change things to fit their clients needs. This is something that you should try as well. Instead of coping the room exactly find one or two things that you love about it and add it to your space, then go from there.

An example would be going to Wal-mart and buying the better homes and gardens bedspread, but finding other things to go with that besides what you see in the picture. Yes these pictures are meant to make your life easy, but it doesn’t represent your individual style. Adding those personal accessories is a great way to make a well designed look your own, so don’t copy cat, be inspired by a room.

Shop Online For Your Home Decor

I always love finding deals online, I’m sure your like me and love to shop and shop and shop. I love looking at new items and trends. The latest decor is always at your finger tips when it comes to the Internet and usually you can get a great deal on things you can’t buy anywhere else. Examples are handmade vases from India, or China. That amazing chest from Ireland that was on sale by a man who made it for his late wife, but has decided to sell it to make ends meet. Or wonderful carvings and woodwork from Africa.

I recommend shopping online for home decor because you can get such great deals. You do have to be safe though when your online and giving out information so make sure you watch out for sites that may try stealing identity information from you. Really what I’m saying is only shop sites that you know to be good sites. Any I give you for instance. You really don’t want to give away all of that money you have saved and earned that could go to getting you that new bathroom, okay so we all know it’s really just going to fill your gas tank, but we can dream right?

A trip though time and art

Since I am an interior design student I am very interested in art and history. Just over a year ago we went to Washington DC. I was very disappointed as most of the museums were closed for renovation. I was surprised as we went during the cherry blossom festival. The worst part about all of that was we had our German exchange student who really wanted to see both the American history museum and the native American museum, both were closed.

I plan on going back some day but I think I may end up at the Stark Museum of Art before I get back to DC. At least I will as long as I move back to Texas like I’m hoping to do. The Stark Museum is located in Orange Texas and has a large collection of Western art and native American art, it’s not just about art though they have books and manuscripts so you can learn a little about the cultures that are in the museum. One collection I am interested in is their decorative arts collection. This collection consist mostly of glass and porcelain. I’m interested in it from a design perspective. Of course all of the art interest me because of this. Another reason I would like to visit this museum is because of there connection to the stark foundation. This foundation supports the arts, education and human services.

Museums are a great place to figure out what kind of art you like. You can check out many different kinds of art and decide what you would like in your home. Art is a great way to express yourself and impress your guest. The best part is you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars. There are many reproductions of famous works that you can get for less the $100. I suggest though you find one piece you really like at an art auction, that way you have something to talk to your guest about. If your planning a summer trip you should really think about adding this museum to your list and visiting the town of Orange Texas. You never know what you may find to add to your home.
